BLOODBORNE INFECTIOUS DISEASES: HIV/AIDS, HEPATITIS B, HEPATITIS C- NIOSH/CDC

Thank you so much for your question regarding guidance for body fluids found in the solid waste industry.  This is a great question and I spent some time looking into various NIOSH documents that you may find helpful.  Although the Bloodborne Pathogen website is primarily focused on healthcare, we are in the process of revising it and we plan to add links to waste disposal materials in response to your inquiry.

On this specific issue, in 1998 NIOSH conducted a Health Hazard Evaluation at a medical waste processing facility.  You may find some recommendations in this report to be helpful especially regarding immunizations, training and personal protective equipment.  That report is located here:  http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/hhe/reports/pdfs/1998-0027-2709.pdf

In addition, you may find some of the resources on our Solid Waste Industry website to be helpful.  That website is located here:  http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/topics/solidwaste/

Thank you again for your question and please let me know if we can be of further assistance.
